Spring Texas Hurricane Season: Beware of Roofing Fraud
The Spring Texas hurricane fall storm season gears up in October and November and can last through the holidays. Storm season in Spring can wreak havoc on homes and roofs, and there is usually little that can be done to prevent damage. This attracts people from around the United States who see an opportunity to make money from roof repair services and roofing scams.
Historically known as “storm chasers”, typically have limited experience when it comes to repairing various types of roof damage, only the sales and marketing skills to encourage homeowners to buy their services.
“We’ve talked to people who have been ripped off,” says Luis Leon, owner of Avalanche Roofing Contractors of Spring TX. “We've had a few calls from homeowners who replaced their roof less than a year ago and have had roof leaks since. Many offer enticing lifetime warranties which are really limited and pro-rated once you read the fine print. The worst part is they are long gone, more than likely a few states over when roof leaks occur.
Even thou they may claim otherwise, “storm chasers” are often poorly equipped to handle roof repairs. Some of these roofers will cause damage themselves when they climb on a homeowner’s roof, or claim there is damage where none exists. Some may even be committing insurance fraud or other crimes. Storm chasers have been known to tell homeowners that their insurance will cover any type of damage or that their roof repair is good for 10 years, even though their company has only existed for 6 months. These roofing contractors are hard to find for warranty claims even 1 year down the road.
Some safe tips to follow are:
Never sign a pre-contract or contingency agreement.
If there is potential storm damage, get a second opinion
If you do get your roof replacement claim approved- get three estimates. Often you can get a better shingle and roofing package than your original roof.
There is a lot of mistrust in our industry and in what people in our industry do. We are trying to change that perception by getting the word out there that people need to take extra care to ensure they are not getting swindled. As your local roofing company, we consider educating clients about potential roofing scams as an important responsibility.
In contrast to our non-local competitors and door-to-door salesmen, our employees have sales, insurance, roofing and construction experience that totals many years in the business. We also guarantee complete transparency.
“Just having people recognize a fraud means we’ve helped in some way,” said Luis. “There are a lot of great contractors out there, and as long as homeowners don’t choose someone who is going to rip them off, then that’s a step in the right direction for this industry.”
Your home is usually your biggest investment. For this reason, it is crucial to know who is working on it. To make sure your roofing contractor is as experienced as they claim, we recommends that homeowners begin by simply asking for a bid. If they can’t produce one, the contractor lacks the experience necessary and is not one with which to do business.
